India’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency recently adopted voluntary energy efficiency policies for air compressors and ultra-high-definition televisions. This initiative aims to reduce the energy consumption and climate impacts attributed to such products, and increase savings for consumers via electricity bills.

Cooling
On behalf of the African Parties to the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the Ozone Layer, Ghana submitted a draft decision proposing next steps in stopping the environmentally harmful dumping of new and used cooling appliances that are also inefficient and/or use obsolete refrigerants. CLASP and IGSD’s investigations supported the quantitative and policy foundation for this proposal.

Rapid growth and industrialization have seen electricity consumption triple over the past decade in Vietnam, with cooling demand contributing a major portion of that growth. CLASP and our local partners kicked off a series of pilot activities that will support effective policy compliance for air conditioners and help protect markets from inefficient and low-quality products.

In October and November, CLASP and the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) continued virtual discussions to introduce the regional Product Registration System—a database tool that will enable regional compliance collaboration within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and help accelerate the implementation of regionally harmonized policies for cooling products.
