India
As one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, India’s transition to energy-efficient appliances is central to meeting its ambitious climate goals, improving energy access, and reducing emissions.
CLASP's impactful work in India
- Through CLASP’s support, India has implemented appliance efficiency policies and energy labels for more than 39 appliances.
- CLASP contributed to the adoption of 10 million energy-efficient fans across India in partnership with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), driving massive savings in power consumption and carbon emissions.
- In 2024 alone, CLASP supported the launch of 18 appliance efficiency policies that will save over 180 TWh of electricity and avoid nearly 146 Mt of CO2 emissions by 2030.

How does appliance efficiency benefit India?
Home to over 1.4 billion people and one of the fastest-growing economies, it is imperative for India to manage growing demand in a cost-effective manner. Energy efficiency is one of the most important tools to do so. Appliances and equipment account for nearly1 33% of household and industrial electricity use, making energy efficiency a vital tool to reduce emissions and enhance quality of life.
CLASP works with national and subnational partners including the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), and state governments to strengthen appliance efficiency policies and accelerate market transformation. We also work to catalyze financing towards adoption of affordable and energy-efficient appliances.
CLASP is advancing market and technical analyses to inform strategies for doubling appliance energy efficiency across India. Current efforts include designing and implementing market transformation programs for high-impact cooling and industrial appliances, while supporting state-level launches and compliance mechanisms. In parallel, CLASP is building ecosystems to expand access to energy-efficient appliances—particularly cold chains—powered by distributed renewable energy (DRE), helping to strengthen rural livelihoods and ensure resilient, climate-smart infrastructure.
