Efficient appliances can unlock a more equitable, sustainable future for Brazil – delivering cross-cutting benefits to those who need them most and putting the country on track to meet its climate targets.

CLASP's impactful work in Brazil

  • CLASP supported policies passed from 2020-2023 will avoid 54 Mt of CO2 emissions through 2030 – including Brazil’s first meaningful air conditioner and refrigerator policies in a decade.
  • With technical support from CLASP, Brazil passed a new refrigerator policy in 2023 that is expected to save consumers an average of USD $164 on electricity bills over the lifetime of the appliances.
  • Brazil’s CLASP-supported air conditioner policy transitioned the domestic market to efficient variable speed units at a remarkable pace – from 45% of the market in 2021 to 100% in 2022.

How does appliance efficiency benefit Brazil?

Brazil’s energy demand is growing fast. The country’s energy grid – one of the most renewable in the world – is being stretched to its limits. Demand for energy intensive services like cooling in the face of high temperatures and frequent heat waves threatens to force the country to fill gaps with fossil fuels.

Energy-efficient appliances are the climate friendly, people-positive solution Brazil needs, making critical energy services like cooking, cooling, and lighting more affordable and accessible. Prioritizing appliance efficiency will allow Brazil to unlock cross-cutting health, economic, and livelihood benefits, especially for vulnerable people.

Brazil is a manufacturing hub, producing nearly all the appliances on its markets domestically. Improving national efficiency levels to meet or exceed global benchmarks will open the door for Brazil to trade its appliances on the global marketplace.

CLASP is working directly with Brazilian regulators across industrial, environmental, and energy agencies in collaboration with industry partners, to advance appliance efficiency at speed and scale.
