United Kingdom
The United Kingdom (UK)—the ninth highest-emitting economy in the appliances sector—has the potential to become a global leader on appliance efficiency policy and has made significant commitments to international climate leadership.
CLASP's impactful work in the United Kingdom
- In partnership with UK organizations, CLASP retrofitted social housing properties with induction cooktops and electric ovens, demonstrating the benefits of electric cooking and highlighting the need to couple cooking with decarbonization policies.
- CLASP’s collaboration with the UK government to develop ambitious standards aimed at phasing out the least efficient products from the market is expected to reduce 122 megatons (Mt) of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2050.
- CLASP helped increase the presence of online energy labels through rigorous assessments and discussions with leading national retailers.

How does appliance efficiency benefit the United Kingdom?
Appliance efficiency has the potential to benefit the 68 million people living and working in the United Kingdom, resulting in positive economic, environmental, and health impacts.
Policies to improve appliance efficiency can help lower energy bills for households, help the country meet climate commitments through reduced carbon emissions, improve energy security by reducing pressure on the national grid, deliver health benefits by improving air quality, and reduce waste that is harmful to people and the planet.
CLASP works closely with local partners to accelerate the transition to electric cooking. We’ve helped define comprehensive policy pathways and retrofitted social housing with induction cookers to demonstrate that the shift away from gas is straightforward and well-received. CLASP is also exploring policy options to increase support for low-global warming potential heat pumps.
CLASP continues to work with the UK Government and national partners to remove the least efficient products from the market, leading to an expected reduction of 122 Mt of CO2 emissions by 2050.

Our programs in the country
CLASP works with policymakers and local partners to drive ambitious product efficiency standards and labels on a range of appliances, including heating, cooking, computers, and displays. Explore our programs and initiatives in the country:
- Cook Cleaner Europe: Alongside partners, CLASP is running a project to accelerate the transition to clean cooking in the European Union (EU) and the UK. Our team is helping develop an EU and UK-specific evidence base on the health impacts of cooking with gas appliances. We are also initiating discussions on policy solutions, and raising public awareness on the health and climate impacts of gas cooking.
- Compliance: CLASP is working with local partners to strengthen compliance with energy efficiency standards and labelling requirements, ensuring consumers can trust efficiency claims made on products being sold both online and in-store.
- Ecodesign and Energy Labelling: CLASP works with policymakers to drive ambitious product efficiency standards and labelling requirements for a range of appliances, including heating, cooking, computers, and displays. We do this through partnerships and innovative research, including for the development of test methods that better reflect how we use products every day.
- Natural refrigerant heat pumps: CLASP is conducting research and engaging with key stakeholders to push the deployment of natural refrigerant heat pumps in Europe. We are identifying effective programs and strategies to increase awareness, availability, and adoption of these climate-friendly heating and cooling systems.
