CEA Research Fellow
CLASP seeks early-career research professional ready to take their experience to the next level with our growing team. The Fellow will support CLASP’s Clean Energy Access Research team, which works in partnership with stakeholders across Africa and South Asia to improve markets for energy-efficient, high-quality appliances on and off the grid. Our team provides world-class technical and advisory services to develop global off-grid appliance markets.
The Fellow will primarily support research and project management under the Low Energy Inclusive Appliance (LEIA) program of the Efficiency for Access Coalition. Efficiency for Access is a global coalition that promotes high-performing appliances that contribute to clean energy access for the world’s poorest people. The fellow will ensure analytical rigor and clarity and provide programming support, particularly for CLASP tools currently under development that require technical assistance. The Fellow will co-lead data input from initial data cleaning through analysis, including coding, programming, data validation, transformation, and documentation during the implementation of the “Consumer Impact Study” research project in 2026.
The Fellow will be responsible for a variety of internal and external facing research activities including, but not limited:
- Supporting Clean Energy Access initiative through data analytics and research focused on of productive Use of Energy (PUE) Appliances
- Developing and refining PUE appliance market sizing models for selected African markets, in collaboration with the data scientist.
- Analysing sales and performance data of partner PUE appliances
- Co-leading data collection, management and analysis of ongoing and upcoming Productive Use of Renewable Energy Demonstrators (PURE DEMO)
- Designing, developing and maintaining dashboards and data visualization for the consumer impact study, PURE DEMO and other CLASP projects
- Data synthesis from internal CLASP databases and relevant external repositories to support research and decision making.
- In collaboration with the LEIA research lead, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning lead, and the data scientist, develop data modelling tool to simulate efficient appliance access and associated impacts.

The Ideal Candidate
Desired Education and Experience
- Recent master’s degree (preferred- up to 3 years) in Data Analytics, Statistics, Economics, Engineering, Computer Science, Energy Systems, Development Studies, a related quantitative field and or a research-based Bachelor’s degree (required) in the said fields with 3 years of relevant professional experience
- Demonstrated experience in data analysis tools and visualization software (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Python libraries like Matplotlib/Seaborn, or R’s ggplot2).
- Academic or practical training in data analysis, research methods, and statistical modeling.
- Coursework or demonstrated experience related to energy access, clean energy, international development, or African markets is highly desirable.
- Understanding of clean energy access, Productive Use of Energy (PUE), or renewable energy technologies is an asset.
- Strong work ethic and an ability to take the initiative; a drive to learn and grow on the job
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; proven ability to write clearly and concisely
- Ability to synthesize data and analysis to inform strategy and recommendations
- Professional demeanor, including the ability to comport in a diverse, international work environment
- Intellectual agility and a commitment to professional development
Key Competencies
- Data Analysis & Programming: Proficiency in data analysis and programming tools such as Python, R, SQL, or similar languages for data cleaning, analysis, and modeling.
- Data Visualization & Dashboards: Experience designing dashboards and visualizations using tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Looker, or Python-based libraries to communicate insights effectively.
- Statistical & Analytical Rigor: Strong analytical skills, including data validation, quality assurance, and interpretation of quantitative results.
- Data Management: Ability to collect, clean, integrate, and synthesize data from multiple internal and external sources.
- Model Development: Experience or interest in developing analytical or simulation models, including market sizing and impact modeling.
- Attention to Detail & Reproducibility: Strong documentation practices and commitment to reproducible, transparent analytical workflows.
Compensation and Location
The ideal candidate is based in Nairobi, Kenya. CLASP offers competitive compensation commensurate with experience, including fully paid health insurance for individuals, a collegial office environment that supports wellness and flexible telecommuting options after a certain period of employment. The selected candidate is expected to work out of CLASP’s office in Nairobi.
