China
As the world's biggest carbon emitter, China represents the largest opportunity to reduce carbon dioxide (CO[sub]2[/sub]) emissions from appliances through market transformation.
CLASP's impactful work in China
- Over the last few years, CLASP experts have supported the development of Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for 13 products that will help avoid 3.47 gigatons of CO2 emissions by 2040.
- Four recent, CLASP-supported policy wins have also helped lead to the reduction of 242 megatons of CO2 emissions by 2030.
- CLASP advised on a new MEPS for permanent magnet motors, making China the first country to surpass the highest International Efficiency class, IE5.

How does appliance efficiency benefit China?
As the largest emitter in the appliances sector, China plays an essential role in climate change mitigation. According to CLASP’s emissions estimates, appliances account for 38% of China’s energy-related CO2 emissions. Market transformation in China is therefore the single largest opportunity in the world to achieve CO2 emissions reductions from appliances.
CLASP’s work on appliance policies, focusing on high-impact products such as room air conditioners, refrigerators, electric motors, heat pumps, and LED lighting, supports China’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. Given that China is the world’s leading exporter of these products, this work also has the potential to drive positive change across the global appliance market.
As consumers increasingly purchase their appliances and equipment online instead of at traditional brick-and-mortar stores, CLASP’s work in China focuses on making appliance efficiency information more readily available during online transactions. In partnership with government and retail stakeholders, CLASP builds on China’s well-established product efficiency labeling framework, providing technical support for market transformation and improved policies for the promotion of high-efficiency appliances.
