About the tool
Repairability determines how long-lasting and cost-effective an appliance is. If repair is difficult, inconvenient, or expensive, customers may dispose of their appliance, resulting in lost productivity and livelihoods, increased electronic waste, and lost consumer investment.
Designed for solar appliance distributors, manufacturers, and repair technicians, the digital, interactive Repair Index Calculator makes it easy to determine a solar appliance’s repairability, ultimately encouraging the design of repair-friendly appliances.
How it works
- Select an appliance type (currently only solar fans, refrigerators, and water pumps)
- Assess appliance model according to metrics that fall within four parameters: Spare Parts, Skills Complexity, Disassembly, Documentation
- Upload documentation (photos, time on tasks, tools list, etc.)
- Obtain Repairability Index (RI) score alongside a RAG interpretation (Poor, Moderate, High)
The higher the score, the more repairable the appliance is. The calculator displays the results by parameter to show where repairability of the appliance is strong or weak. This encourages manufacturers to design more repairable appliances; distributors to provide spare parts; and programs/policymakers to identify ecosystem gaps.
We encourage use of the tool for different appliance models used in a variety of environments. Over time, as audiences use the calculator, data can be used to provide a repairability baseline for future designs and offer transparency for consumers.
